Susan
Waldron

Susan Waldron is a native of northern California. She lives in Grass Valley, with her husband and their 4 furry children, where she has a pottery studio. Susan has a Bachelors degree from the University of Southern California's School of Film and Television. She enjoys creating in many art forms, but it has been 7 years since she threw her first bowl and pottery seems to have stuck. Although she enjoys a variety of firing methods the majority of her work is "fast-fire", which is a low fire, with post firing techniques. This entails removing the piece from the kiln while it is still hot and using horse hair (or other carbon based combustibles) to create "carbon trails" then spraying it with a stain. In varying degrees of coolness this produces a rich variety of colors from yellow to amber to russet. Susan then embellishes some pieces with copper wire, beads and feathers. Much of her inspiration comes from the slot canyons of Utah, northern Arizona and locally from the Yuba River. Susan has had fun having a pottery booth at the Celtic Festival the last two years with her friend and fellow potter, Cathi Scarpa, as well as the Nevada City and Grass Valley Studio Tour.

Kathryn Wronski

Painting dogs (and sometimes cats and llamas) has become the subject matter of delight for me. Each pet is a new experience with its unique expression and personality to capture on canvas.

Working in oil, I use unique color combinations to portray the warmth and fun we all get from our pets. I work from your photographs - so just contact me to get started!

When not painting dogs, cats, llamas, ox, pigs and anything else on 4 legs, I have been working on a series of local scenes of Nevada City and Grass Valley. The same palette you see in my animals are used to decorate the beautiful towns here in the foothills.

My studio is located next to Nevada City Picture Framing at:

Helen Strang

A professional illustrator, cartoonist, and graphic designer by day, Helen Strang leaves evenings and weekends free for personal exploration in the field of fine art.

Commercial work involves the discipline of tuning in to what each individual client is trying to say, and the creation of work that expresses his/her business endeavors; this skill calls for flexibility of style and technique coupled with a spirit of service. "Creating custom work for so many years has honed my technical skills, so that now I can put this same effort into my own expression."

Painting exterior landscapes direct from life, or from the interior landscapes seen inside her head, she continues to explore...

Artist Statement

I have been creating these carvings for about 15 years, although, it has been most of my life, in one way or another.

I collect natural stones in from many different areas and wide ranging localities..."power spots" if you will.

I bring them to my work area, where they may sit for years. At a point, I am inspired to carve them individually. As I start, most signs and figures come spontaneously as I am working.

I have no real plan for any stone, as I start creating. It just "happens" as I carve...

I leave it to individuals to pick the stone they like. It may be that it has a message for them, perhaps a lesson...

It's up to the person to decide which one "touches" them, and, act accordingly.

Maybe it is waiting for a person to recognize it, and it's message. Or, just to enjoy it as it is.

Many people find, after they take one home, and maybe think, or meditate, on it, that it has a meaning not immediately recognized, or obvious.

I invite you to try this here, in a nice setting, and see what, if anything, you see in them...

I have been commissioned to create many for people on an individualized, spiritual, basis. Either using their designs and wishes, or, as inspired by personal contact with that person, or persons. I invite you to look, feel, consider these stones. As you do so, you may find one "speaks" to you. Many have messages for you to see. They may inspire you to want to create your own, or, have me create one for you, based upon my contact and impressions of you. I am available to meet and create, as a person desires.

I am available for custom work, based on your wishes, and can work in various scales and settings.

Thanks for taking the time to read my words.

Clay is:
Created from Earth and Water
Transformed by Fire and Air
Revealing the Spirit of the clay and Artists

Catherine has studied with a variety of artists and creates functional and decorative ware.

She enjoys all types of firings from ancient Pit Firing, Fast Firing, to High Firing. With Pit Firing she enjoys the intimacy with the pots from the shaping, burnishing and the hope of capturing the mark of the fire and smoke in the clay.

Fast firing provides opportunities to watch the flames dance within and out of the kiln. The pots are removed when glowing hot and then working immediately on applying a variety of post firing techniques. The intimacy of working with the hot pots is exciting.

To create functional ware she uses higher temperatures acquired either in an electric kiln, gas kiln or wood fired kilns. All functional pots are food safe.

Catherine particularly enjoys altering shapes through decorative processes like carving, or adding onto the pots. She can be reached at (530) 272-3621
